Pelicans, Pelicans Everywhere!!

For Christmas this year, OWLS got PELICANS!! During this winter season we received 22 brown pelicans in all. They suffered a variety of injuries and illnesses. Most were turned in from local residents or transferred from other rehab facilities. From frost bite to fishing line entanglement they were treated, cared for and happily released! At one point in December we were caring for eight pelicans and in January another six came in within a couple days of each other! That’s a lot of fish!! It is hard not to get attached to these beautiful giants, but after weeks of feeding and cleaning we were very happy and relieved to send them on their way!!

We would like to extend a special thank you to those fishermen and fish shops who have been donating fish to keep these birds happy and healthy!!

We always need a variety of sizes for our injured water birds, so if you love to fish or cast net, but don’t like to eat the fish or have some to share, please contact the shelter. We’ll be happy to take those leftovers off your hands! THANKS!!
