Elementary & High School Education


One of the main goals of the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter (OWLS) is education.

Our programs are a fun way to contribute to our shelter. Book a wildlife program and fees from these programs go directly back to the shelter operations. This allows us to purchase medicines, food and supplies needed to give our patients the best possible care. In exchange you get to visit with one or more of our Education Animals, do a tracks, scat or pellet program or come take a tour of our hospital.

Following is a brief description of some of the programs OWLS has to offer for Elementary through High School:

WILDLIFE PROGRAMS
Choose one of our current programs or ask us to design one for you

$65/30 students Current program titles: Raptor Rap, Whooo's That, Night Crew,'Possum M.D. & Falcon Facts Emphasis on local wildlife, ecology, adaptations for survival, human interaction, and local/national environmental issues affecting wildlife. We can include a powerpoint presentation to introduce a few of OWLS' past patients and their histories, hands-on activities with some of our touch displays, and an introduction to one or more of our resident animals.

CONSERVATION PROGRAMS
Choose one of our hands-on conservation programs or ask us to design one for you

$35/30 students Current program titles: Habitat, Pellet Police, Whose Scat Is That?, Trax Facts & Hazards In our Hands Whether you want to design a wildlife habitat and get it certified, learn about the owl digestion process, explore signs that wildlife leave behind or discover the hazards that challenge native wildlife on a daily basis, we have a program for you. Just contact our Education Department and discuss your program needs. We'll be happy to assist you in designing a program to meet your needs.

ASSEMBLY PROGRAMS
For groups larger than 30, an assembly program is just the thing.

$3 per person

BEHIND THE SCENES HOSPITAL TOURS
Wonder what goes on in a wildlife hospital? Come visit us and we'll show you!

See what it is like to be an injured animal on a journey through the healing process, start at check-in and the initial exam, then check out the daily menu, lab tests and baby nursery.

Learn baby bird I.D., care and handling. Participate in daily nursery routines preparing food, feeding babies and cleaning nests. Once the camp is completed and students turn 13, they are eligible to become Junior Volunteers at OWLS.
